Welcome!

The Ita Story

Ita Gymnastics was founded to honor my great grandmother, Luisa Estrella Marquez. As the matriarch of my Puerto Rican family, she nurtured the women in my life including my abuelita, mother, and tías and taught us the power of a caring, strong matriarch.

Empowered by the Puerto Rican women in my life, I began my journey into the world of gymnastics at si years old at the recreational program in my hometown of Long Beach, California. As I learned how to move, strengthen my body, and improved my gymnastics skills, I was fast-tracked into a team gymnastics program. The team taught me about accountability, determination, and the importance of a strong support system.

Despite the Success and lasting friendships forged as a gymnast, there was always one aspect of the culture of gymnastics that I felt needed a re-evaluation. The “old school” mindset of success at the cost of your physical and mental health is something that anyone seriously in the world of gymnastics can attest to. With Ita, I wanted to show that there’s another way.

After ending my gymnastics career, I moved to NYC and reconnected with the Puerto Rican ride of my heritage. I worked in gyms including some of the larger corporate NYC gyms and wanted to shake up the status quo! Just as I had given up hope on finding a place to teach gymnastics in a healthy/”alternative” way, my friend opened a gym in Sunset Park. That experience showed me that it is possible to coach lovingly, prioritize making students and coaches feel heard, and build a wonderful, tight-knit community of gymnastics lovers. With Ita, I’m continuing this push – to lead with love, movement, kindness, and community.

From my family to yours, welcome to the Ita Community. We hope to see you soon!

Besitos,

Alyssa
